Silke – Bridge Wardens’ Arkwright Scholar update 2018

Silke became one of our Rochester Bridge Trust Arkwright Engineering Scholars in 2016, while a pupil at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls. We’re pleased to see her now take the next step in her engineering education.

If I could offer just one piece of advice to future Rochester Bridge Trust Arkwright Engineering Scholars, it would be to make the most of all the opportunities and ask lots of questions.

The Rochester Bridge Trust has given me some really amazing experiences during my time as a scholar, and included within that are the people I’ve met. My scholarship has been a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and industry professionals and I enjoyed making the most of conversations with all of these people to learn more about my chosen career.

Having completed my A-levels I’m now headed to Brunel to study towards a BSc in Product Design, which combines creativity and engineering to develop innovative products. The course includes a year in industry.

Elements of study will include materials, mechanics, electronics and mathematics. I’m especially interested in sustainability, which I like to incorporate into my designs. During my A-levels I studied biomimicry as part of my extended project – by basing designs on nature, new levels of sustainability can be achieved, which I find really inspirational.

The course should teach me the key skills to make the most of my interests. I’m really looking forward to achieving my design ambitions.
