My name is Emma. I’m studying A Levels in Maths, Physics and Geography and an AS in Further Maths at Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School. My goal is to be a chartered engineer, applying my skills to real-world engineering challenges and solving problems with practical solutions.
On canal boat trips as a child, I was fascinated by locks and enjoyed operating the gates using gears and levers to manage the differing water levels. This awakened an early interest in hands-on mechanics. For my Arkwright Project, I designed and built a versatile storage unit with online tracking to demonstrate how technology can make everyday items more efficient and user-friendly.
At school, I am in a STEM Racing Team designing, manufacturing, and racing a miniature F1 car. I try to approach the technical challenges methodically and creatively whilst handling the team’s expectations, sharing my ideas succinctly and meeting deadlines.
From a young age, I have enjoyed visiting engineering and science museums. Motivated by these visits, I completed the Engineering Experience course by Smallpeice Trust, CyberFirst Girls Development Days by NCSC/GCHQ and the SheCanEngineer IMechE workshop. These events were inspiring and showed that women can not only succeed in engineering but also have a great experience. Outside of my studies, I work as a qualified Lifeguard and I play netball and squash.
