David – First year as a Harriott scholar

It’s been a very hard-working and persevering academic first year of A-levels, with huge amounts of content being covered in a short period of time and homework deadlines becoming shorter too.

Nevertheless, I’ve been able to strive through it and do my best towards what’s needed of me. I’m hopeful my hard work will pay off in my end of year exams which I’ve just taken.

I’ve enjoyed learning and understanding the new aspects of my subjects and how they can apply to real life circumstances. I’ve also enjoyed the trips I’ve been on, including the ones with the Rochester Bridge Trust, where we have encountered many types of bridges in parks and museums. These experiences have been beneficial and useful in getting a better knowledge on civil engineering.

This scholarship has helped me in a variety of ways. One of the ways is physically experiencing civil engineering, as previously stated, by doing hands-on activities with the rest of the scholars by building bridges on many occasions. Having these days out was very fun and entertaining. The scholarship has also aided me financially, by allowing me to purchase varied educational resources, such as revision guides for my subjects, stationery and the fx-cg50 calculator, which is quite expensive. These resources have been very beneficial for my education and I would like to thank the Trust again for this as I am truly grateful.

My plans this summer are to not only rest and have an amusing 6-7 weeks with my friends and family, but to also prepare for Year 13 by still revising and acquiring all the things I need for the year ahead.
