Five young people and their schools are benefitting from new scholarships to support them on the path to becoming engineers.
Provided by the Rochester Bridge Trust, the scholarships provide funding and support for young people studying A-levels in maths and physics or maths and design and technology, and also give money to their school at time of application.
Four of the students are based in Medway, while a fifth lives and studies in Thanet. All are studying A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.
David Orisa-Kingsley of St John Fisher Comprehensive School in Chatham was presented with the Harriott Engineering Scholarship, which is open to non-selective state school pupils living or studying in Medway, Maidstone or Tonbridge & Malling.
The Telford Engineering Scholarship is for students at non-fee-paying selective schools, in the historic county of Kent (which includes Medway, Bexley and Bromley). This was presented to Frances Brown of Rainham Mark Grammar School; Hayden Scott of Dane Court Grammar School, Broadstairs; Madiha Arshad of Rochester Grammar School; and Ted Vincent of Sir Joseph Williamson Mathematical School, Rochester.
The Trust first started offering scholarships in 2010, when it launched the Rochester Bridge Trust Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. This is the first academic year for these two new scholarships, which expand the reach of the Trust’s education programme.
Education Officer James Miller of the Rochester Bridge Trust oversees the scholarships programme. He said: “We are pleased to welcome these five students to our scholars’ group. Each of the students was selected because of how dedicated they are to their studies, and our scholarships aim to build on that enthusiasm, providing additional experiences and support as the young people progress in their education.
The scholars were officially welcomed to the Trust during a presentation event at the Bridge Chapel in Rochester.
