Hollywood blockbuster helps inspire young engineers

Young people were given an out of this world introduction to engineering, with a free screening of a Hollywood Blockbuster.

More than 70 children and adults watched The Martian starring Matt Damon at an event hosted by the Rochester Bridge Trust.

The film, which tells the story of an astronaut stranded on Mars, highlights the range of scientific and engineering skills the character utilises to stay alive in the red planet’s hostile environment.

Education Officer Aileen White watched alongside the attendees. She said: “One of the ways we learn about the world is by storytelling, and The Martian tells a great story about how vital engineering can be. Matt Damon’s character demonstrates how an ordinary engineer can achieve extraordinary things, showing that lessons from the classroom really do have a practical use.

“From talking to some of the young people who attended, I could see they also appreciated the engineering they saw on the big screen and realised that the skills they are developing are quite simply out of this world!”

The screening was held at the University of Greenwich, as part of the Trust’s participation in the Year of Engineering.

More films highlighting the practical application of engineering are planned to be shown later in the year. To register your interest contact Education Officer Aileen White.
